After successfully completing this course, as well as completing a first aid certificate and Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate, students will have the necessary qualifications to obtain a provisional 1A and 1C license. This is required for work as an unarmed guard or as a crowd controller/doorman. Students who have completed this course have the option of spending an extra half day completing the units necessary for obtaining a 1E Monitoring Centre License.
The Body Guarding Course is delivered over 14 days, upon completion of which candidates are able to apply for a provisional 1B license. Those who have completed the Body Guarding Course will also have completed the core units necessary for obtaining a 1D Dog Handler’s License and/or a 1F Armed Guard License. All those applying for a provisional (or full) security license must hold a current Senior First Aid certificate bearing Workcover NSW’s “FA” approval number or obtain a Statement of Attainment for competency unit HLTFA301B Apply First Aid (available through Always Synergy). For the provisional 1B crowd controller/doorman license, students must also hold a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate.
It should also be noted that before enrolment in any security course, students must pass a language, literacy and numeracy assessment. This is a short test which can be taken at the time of enrolment.
Classes generally consist of 6-12 people. Students will be provided with all necessary training materials and documentation.
Security Licence Legal Requirements
It is illegal in NSW (and other Australian states) to perform any kind of security work without holding a security license.
The NSW security industry is regulated by the Security Industry Registry (SIR), a branch of the NSW Police. SIR regulates the requirements for obtaining a security license in the state, and upon completion of the relevant course requirements you can apply to SIR to have a security license issued to you.
Course requirements are decided by the Security Industry Registry.
Generally you are required to undertake a training course of approximately two weeks duration as well as completing an eligible First Aid course (and Responsible Service of Alcohol for 1B licenses), after which you can apply for a provisional license in the relevant license class. To complete the training course you will need to demonstrate competence in both written and practical assessment. A provisional license must be held for at least twelve months before you can apply to SIR for a full license. When performing crowd control work such as at a club or hotel or public event, a provisional guard must work under the direct supervision of a fully licensed guard. There is no such requirement for static work, such as a construction site or hospital, although provisional 1A licencees are required to follow a comprehensively documented work procedure.
After completing the training course, and before applying for a full license, a provisional license holder is required to be assessed in the workplace, twice for 1A/1C/1E provisional licenses and three times for 1B provisional license holders. The workplace assessment involves a qualified assessor asking questions and observing the guard at work, to ensure the guard possesses the skills and knowledge taught during the training course.
It is important to be aware of a number of requirements of the SIR and the NSW Security Industry Act which will determine whether you are eligible to be issued a license:
· You must be a permanent Australian resident.
· You must be 18 years of age or older.
· You must furnish a character reference upon application for a provisional or full license.
· A license will be refused or revoked if the applicant or licensee has been convicted of certain criminal offences within the previous 10 years.
· A license will be refused of revoked if the applicant or licensee has been found guilty of certain offences, but with no conviction recorded, within the previous 5 years.
· The proscribed offenses include assault, robbery, riot, affray, stalking or intimidation, fraud, theft, as well as offences relating to firearms/weapons, prohibited drugs, terrorism, organized crime, and reckless conduct causing death in the workplace. Please contact SIR for more information.
· The Commissioner of Police has the discretion to refuse or revoke a license where the applicant or holder is not of good or fit character, or it is not in the public interest for the license to be issued.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process by which candidates may obtain qualification in Units of Competency by demonstrating they possess the required knowledge, skills and competency covered by the unit.
This knowledge is demonstrated by providing evidence of competency acquired through formal or informal training or work experience relevant to the qualification sought. The evidence required includes (but is not limited to) documented experience in a relevant field of work, formal and informal education relating to the qualification, and direct examination by our assessor to determine both competencies and gaps in knowledge. The candidate is assessed against all the areas of knowledge required by each Unit of Competency to ascertain if, or to what extent, they are competent.
This process is likely to be most appropriate for candidates enrolling for qualifications who want recognition of prior learning or current competencies, for existing workers, for individuals with overseas qualifications, for recent migrants with established work histories, for people returning to the workplace, and for people with disabilities or injuries requiring a change in career.
Applications for RPL assessment, and further information about the process and its requirements, are available from the Synergy Head Office.
